There is a selection in the handset option "best base" so the handset automatically connects to the base with the best signal. You can also manually switch between several base stations. This is useful for coverage over a large area, separate buildings. For example, you can carry your personal handset (with your phonebook entries) and use it with base for personal residence or with the base of your home office.
